NAD supplements come in more forms than ever, from traditional capsules and powders to liquid drops, liposomal formulas, and even IV infusions. But here's something worth knowing before buying: not every product labeled "NAD+" contains the same ingredient.

Some supplements contain NAD+ directly, while others use precursors such as NMN or NR that the body converts into NAD+. The delivery method matters, too, although a fancy formula doesn't automatically make a supplement more effective.

So, which NAD supplement forms have the most research behind them, and how do you choose one?

Key Takeaways:

  • NAD supplements come in different forms, including capsules, powders, liquids, liposomal products, and IV infusions.
  • NMN and NR are NAD+ precursors, while direct NAD+ products contain the molecule itself.
  • Oral NMN and NR have stronger human evidence for raising NAD+ levels than most direct NAD+ supplements. (1)
  • Liquid and liposomal NAD+ aren't necessarily better than regular capsules, as clinical comparisons remain limited. (1)

What Counts as an NAD Supplement?

NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme found in every living cell. It helps convert nutrients into energy and supports processes involved in DNA repair and cellular health.

NAD+ metabolism can change with age, which has sparked interest in supplements designed to support its levels. However, researchers are still investigating how these changes differ between tissues and individuals. (2)

There are four main NAD-related ingredients you may encounter.

Ingredient What Is It? Human Evidence
NAD+ The coenzyme itself Limited evidence for direct oral supplementation
NMN A precursor the body uses to produce NAD+ Human trials show increased blood NAD+
NR Another NAD+ precursor Multiple human trials show increased blood NAD+
NADH The reduced form of NAD+ Studied for specific health conditions, with less evidence for increasing NAD+

The main distinction is that NMN and NR help the body make NAD+, while direct NAD+ supplements supply the molecule itself.

That doesn't automatically make direct NAD+ more effective. The body must still absorb, process, and use whatever you take. (3)

What Forms Do NAD Supplements Come In?

NAD supplements differ in both their ingredients and how they are delivered. Here's what separates the main options.

NAD Capsules and Tablets

Capsules are one of the most straightforward choices. They're convenient, easy to measure, and don't require mixing or refrigeration unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise.

You can find capsules containing NMN, NR, direct NAD+, or combinations of these ingredients.

Capsules also have an advantage when it comes to research. Several human trials investigating NAD+ precursors have used oral NMN or NR supplements. (1)

NAD Powder

NAD powder is popular among people who prefer flexible serving sizes or dislike swallowing capsules.

However, NAD powder isn't one specific ingredient. Products sold under this name may contain direct NAD+, NMN, or NR.

Before buying, check:

  • The exact active ingredient listed on the label
  • Milligrams per serving
  • Third-party testing results
  • Storage and moisture-protection instructions

Powders can make dose adjustments easier, but measuring them accurately matters. A calibrated milligram scale or manufacturer-provided measuring system is safer than guessing with a kitchen spoon.

Liquid NAD

Liquid NAD supplements include drops, oral solutions, and ready-to-drink products. Some contain direct NAD+, while others contain NMN or NR.

Their biggest selling point is convenience, especially for people who struggle with capsules.

You may also see claims that liquid NAD absorbs faster or works better. However, there's limited human evidence showing that liquid NAD+ produces better results than standard oral NMN or NR supplements. (1)

Another consideration is stability. Liquid formulations may have different storage and shelf-life requirements, so checking the manufacturer's testing and instructions is worthwhile.

Liposomal NAD+

Liposomal supplements use lipid-based structures designed to carry active ingredients. The idea is to protect certain compounds during digestion and potentially improve their delivery.

Sounds promising, right? The catch is that liposomal delivery technology doesn't automatically translate into better clinical results.

Research has yet to establish that liposomal NAD+ supplements consistently outperform conventional NMN or NR capsules in humans. (1)

Also, remember that "liposomal" describes the delivery system, not the NAD-related ingredient inside it.

Sublingual NAD, Patches, and IV NAD+

Other available formats include sublingual products placed under the tongue, transdermal patches, and intravenous NAD+ infusions.

Each uses a different delivery approach, but their clinical evidence varies considerably.

For example, IV NAD+ delivers the substance directly into the bloodstream. However, this doesn't mean it has proven anti-aging benefits.

A 2026 systematic review examining 113 preclinical and human studies found no eligible clinical-outcome trials establishing the anti-aging effectiveness of intravenous or intramuscular NAD+ itself. (1)

IV treatment also carries procedure-related risks and requires qualified medical supervision.

Which NAD Supplement Forms Have the Best Human Evidence?

Oral NMN and NR currently have the strongest human evidence for increasing NAD+ biomarkers. However, raising NAD+ levels in the blood doesn't necessarily mean a supplement slows aging or extends lifespan.

Here's what researchers have found.

NMN Supplements

In a randomized clinical trial involving 30 healthy adults, researchers gave participants either 250 mg of NMN daily or a placebo for 12 weeks.

Those taking NMN experienced a significant increase in whole-blood NAD+ levels. The researchers also reported no obvious adverse effects during the study. (4)

Still, the trial was relatively small and didn't establish long-term anti-aging benefits.

NR Supplements

NR has also produced measurable changes in human studies.

In an eight-week randomized trial, researchers tested three daily doses of NR in healthy overweight adults:

  • 100 mg: Blood NAD+ increased by approximately 22%.
  • 300 mg: Blood NAD+ increased by approximately 51%.
  • 1,000 mg: Blood NAD+ increased by approximately 142%.

Researchers observed these dose-related increases within two weeks, and the changes remained elevated throughout the study. (5)

An interesting detail comes from a small 2026 study involving 12 participants receiving 1,200 mg daily of NMN or NR. Researchers found that NAD+ augmentation took roughly two weeks to approach steady-state levels, with considerable differences between individuals. (6)

This highlights why judging an NAD supplement after just one or two doses may tell you very little about its effects on NAD+ biomarkers.

What about direct NAD+?

Direct oral NAD+ products have considerably less human research than NMN and NR. Larger clinical trials are needed to understand how effectively different direct NAD+ formulations work and their potential health benefits. (1)

What Is Selerb NAD?

Selerb NAD refers to a range of NAD-related supplements sold by the wellness brand Selerb.

Its product lineup includes different formulations rather than one standard NAD supplement.

For example, the brand's NAD+ for Women contains β-NAD+ alongside ingredients such as CoQ10, resveratrol, glycine, and alpha-lipoic acid. Selerb also sells a separate liposomal NMN supplement containing 500 mg of β-NMN per serving. (7)(8)

These are not identical products. One contains direct NAD+, while the other contains an NAD+ precursor.

If you're considering Selerb NAD or another multi-ingredient formula, examine the Supplement Facts panel to identify the NAD-related ingredient and its dose.

Also, keep in mind that evidence supporting NMN or NR cannot automatically be applied to products containing direct NAD+.

How to Choose an NAD Supplement

With so many products available, it's easy to get distracted by claims about advanced absorption or cellular rejuvenation.

A better approach is to focus on the details that matter.

  • Check the ingredient: Identify NAD+, NMN, NR, or NADH rather than relying on the front label.
  • Compare the dosage: Look for amounts studied in human trials, while remembering that research doses aren't personal recommendations.
  • Look for third-party testing: Ideally, the manufacturer should provide batch-specific testing for identity, purity, and contaminants.
  • Consider convenience: Capsules provide consistent premeasured servings, while powders and liquids may suit different preferences.
  • Be cautious with big promises: Increasing NAD+ biomarkers is not the same as proving that a product prevents aging or disease.

If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication, or managing a medical condition, speak with your healthcare professional before starting an NAD-related supplement.

Final Words

There's no shortage of NAD supplement products, but the most expensive or technologically advanced option isn't necessarily the best.

Current human studies provide stronger support for oral NMN and NR as ways to increase NAD+ biomarkers. Liquid NAD, liposomal products, powders containing direct NAD+, and other delivery methods still need more clinical research.

And while NAD+ supplementation is an interesting area of healthy aging research, its long-term health benefits remain uncertain.

At Omre, we focus on research-informed formulas rather than complicated delivery claims. Our Omre NMN + Resveratrol supplement brings together NMN and resveratrol for people interested in supporting their cellular health as part of a balanced wellness routine.

FAQs

Is liquid NAD better than NAD capsules?

There's currently limited clinical evidence showing that liquid NAD+ supplements work better than standard oral capsules. Ingredient quality, dosage, and human research matter more than the liquid format alone.

Does NAD powder work?

It depends on the ingredient. NMN and NR powders contain compounds with human evidence for increasing NAD+ biomarkers, but research on direct NAD+ powder is more limited. The powdered format itself doesn't guarantee effectiveness.

Is NMN the same as NAD+?

No. NMN is a precursor that the body can use to produce NAD+. NAD+ is the coenzyme involved in cellular energy metabolism and other biological processes.

Can your body absorb NAD+ supplements directly?

The body can process dietary NAD-related compounds, but the extent to which intact NAD+ from oral supplements reaches cells remains unclear. Researchers have stronger human evidence for increasing NAD+ biomarkers through NMN and NR supplementation.

Which form of NAD supplement has the most research?

Oral NR and NMN have the most relevant human clinical evidence for increasing NAD+ levels. NR has a substantial research base, while NMN studies continue to grow. Neither has been proven to extend human lifespan.
