No supplement can make damaged cells regenerate on command. What certain nutrients and compounds can do is support the systems cells rely on for energy, maintenance, recycling, membrane health, and healthy aging.

That distinction matters. “Cell regeneration” gets used loosely online, but supporting NAD+, autophagy, mitochondria, or cellular senescence is not the same as making cells grow faster.

What Does Cell Regeneration Mean?

Your body constantly replaces, repairs, and removes cells. Skin cells turn over. Muscle adapts after exercise. Damaged proteins and cell components get broken down and recycled.

Several processes sit underneath this maintenance system:

  • Cellular energy production, largely through mitochondria

  • DNA maintenance and repair

  • Autophagy, which clears damaged cellular material

  • Cell membrane maintenance

  • Removal of dysfunctional or senescent cells

  • Replacement of damaged cells through normal cell division

So, a “cell regeneration supplement” may support one of these processes without directly regenerating tissue.

Healthy cell support also does not mean stimulating cells to divide as quickly as possible. Controlled cell growth is part of normal biology. Uncontrolled growth is not something you want to encourage.

There is no single supplement that covers every part of cellular health.

1. NMN

Nicotinamide mononucleotide, or NMN, is a precursor to NAD+, a molecule cells need for energy metabolism and several enzymes involved in cellular maintenance.

One randomized trial followed 80 healthy middle-aged adults who took 300 mg, 600 mg, 900 mg of NMN, or placebo daily for 60 days. Blood NAD concentrations increased significantly in all three NMN groups, with the highest levels seen at 600 mg and 900 mg. The NMN groups also improved their six-minute walking distance compared with placebo (1).

That does not prove NMN directly regenerates cells. A better description is that NMN can raise NAD availability, which may support cellular processes that depend on NAD.

2. Spermidine

Spermidine is a natural polyamine found in the body and foods such as wheat germ, mushrooms, soybeans, and aged cheese.

Most interest around spermidine comes from autophagy, the process cells use to break down and recycle damaged components.

Human outcomes are less clear. In a 12-month randomized trial, 100 adults aged 60 to 90 received a supplement providing 0.9 mg of spermidine daily or placebo. Researchers found no significant improvement in the main memory outcome or most secondary outcomes, although exploratory findings suggested possible effects on inflammation and verbal memory (2).

So, spermidine has an interesting biological mechanism, but we should not treat autophagy research as proof of human cellular regeneration.

3. Creatine

Creatine rarely gets mentioned on “cell regeneration” lists, which is surprising.

Inside cells, creatine helps replenish ATP, the immediate form of energy cells use to perform work. This matters greatly in muscle cells, where energy demand can rise quickly.

The human evidence is also far deeper than it is for many fashionable longevity compounds. A 2025 meta-analysis of eight randomized trials involving 482 older adults found that creatine combined with resistance training improved lower-body strength and lean tissue mass compared with resistance training plus placebo (3).

Creatine is not a direct regenerative compound. Still, for supporting cellular energy and maintaining aging muscle, it has a strong research base.

4. CoQ10

Coenzyme Q10 sits inside mitochondrial membranes and plays a role in the electron transport chain, where cells generate ATP.

That sounds promising for mitochondrial health, but supplementation does not guarantee that mitochondria will work better.

A randomized trial in 40 older adults tested 400 mg of CoQ10 daily for 12 weeks. Blood CoQ10 levels rose significantly, yet researchers found no significant improvements in mitochondrial respiratory capacity, mitochondrial content, aerobic fitness, or physical performance (4).

This is a useful reminder: increasing the amount of a nutrient in your blood and improving cellular function are two different things.

5. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

EPA and DHA, the main omega-3 fats found in fish oil, become part of cell membranes.

Cell membranes are not simply wrappers around cells. Their fatty-acid composition influences membrane fluidity, signaling, transport, and inflammatory responses.

In one randomized study, older adults received 4 g of omega-3s daily for six months. The researchers saw some improvements in muscle strength, but omega-3 supplementation did not significantly improve mitochondrial respiration or ATP production (5).

For cellular health, omega-3s make more sense as membrane-supporting nutrients than as direct cell-regeneration supplements.

6. Fisetin

Fisetin is a flavonoid found naturally in foods such as strawberries and apples.

Researchers are interested in fisetin because laboratory and animal studies suggest it may have senolytic effects. Senolytics target senescent cells, older dysfunctional cells that stop dividing but remain metabolically active.

Human evidence remains very early.

A small pilot study gave 10 healthy adults over age 50 a dose of 500 mg fisetin daily for one week per month over six months. Four participants showed a reduction in measured biological age, five showed an increase, and one showed no change (6).

With only 10 participants and mixed results, that is far too little evidence to call fisetin a proven cellular regeneration supplement.

Which Supplement Is Best for Cellular Repair?

It depends on which cellular process you are trying to support.

  • For NAD+ support: NMN

  • For autophagy research: Spermidine

  • For ATP and muscle energy: Creatine

  • For mitochondrial pathways: CoQ10

  • For cell membrane health: Omega-3 fatty acids

  • For cellular senescence research: Fisetin

This distinction is more useful than ranking every supplement from “best” to “worst.” Cells rely on many connected systems, and these compounds do very different jobs.

Supplements Cannot Replace the Basics

Cells need raw materials and the right environment to maintain themselves.

Adequate protein provides amino acids for building and repairing tissues. Exercise sends signals that encourage muscle adaptation and mitochondrial changes. 

Sleep supports recovery, while vitamins and minerals from a balanced diet act as cofactors in hundreds of cellular reactions.

Supplements can fill a specific role, but they work on top of those basics, not instead of them.

Safety depends on the supplement, dose, medications, and your health.

Speak with a doctor or pharmacist before adding new supplements if you:

  • Take prescription medicines

  • Have a chronic medical condition

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Are preparing for surgery

  • Are undergoing cancer treatment

People receiving cancer treatment should be especially careful with supplements marketed around “cell growth,” antioxidants, or senolytic activity. These compounds can affect biological pathways that may also matter during treatment.

Cell regeneration is not something a supplement can switch on like a light. What certain compounds may do is support the systems cells already use for energy, repair, recycling, membrane health, and healthy aging.
